Road To Mastering The UK: Can I Beat A Lifelong Truck Driver
Mastering the UK in GeoGuessr: A Humbling First Round
GeoGuessr is a game of skill, patience, and a little bit of luck. But when you're up against someone who has spent their entire career driving trucks around the UK, you're in for a rough time. Enter my father—who knows the UK road network like the back of his hand—and me, trying to claw together some regional knowledge to keep up. We played our first few rounds tonight, and well... let's just say I’ve got some work to do.
Round 1: A Lucky Start in Northern Ireland
We got dropped into what looked like the absolute middle of nowhere—a little farm track surrounded by endless green fields. Thankfully, I managed to stumble upon a road sign that looked unmistakably Irish. I hedged my bets on Northern Ireland, plonked my guess down, and lo and behold, I was right! My father, on the other hand, thought we were somewhere in Wales. That put me off to a solid start, with the scores at 3549 to 232 in my favour.
Round 2: The Reality Check
The next round, though, was a swift reality check. We landed in what looked like a modern housing estate, bathed in sunshine, with large houses that screamed "southern England." So, I went with a guess near London.
Big mistake.
Turns out, we were way up in Dundee. And my father? He’d placed his marker close enough to win big points. I was still hanging onto the lead, but just barely—3591 to 3552.
Round 3: East Sussex... Kind Of
This one gave me hope. We were in yet another housing estate, but I managed to find a sign that said, "Welcome to East Sussex." Perfect. I placed my guess on the north-east side of Royal Tunbridge Wells, feeling pretty smug. My father wasn’t too far off, but I still did well enough to hold onto my lead.
The score? 8433 to 7459 in my favour. So far, so good.
Round 4: The North Strikes Back
Dropped into another nondescript location, I knew we were somewhere north of Birmingham. I saw a phone number starting with 0161, and if I'd known my UK area codes, that probably would have helped a lot. Then I spotted a bin with Oldham Council written on it. Great! Except... I had no idea where Oldham actually was. So, I went with a random spot north of Stoke-on-Trent.
Turns out, Oldham is in Manchester. My father knew this, of course. And with that, he snatched the lead: 12063 to 11744.
Round 5: The Final Blow
And then, the final round. Another housing estate. Could be anywhere. I spent most of my 1 minute 30 seconds just trying to escape and find a clue. No luck. With no real idea where to go, I slapped my guess down on Stratford-upon-Avon.
The actual location? Cambridge. Not too far off, but my father had nailed it. And that was it—game over.
Final score: 16778 to 13301.
Takeaways from Game 1
- Irish road signs saved me early on. Knowing a bit about how regional signs differ is a huge advantage.
- Big houses and sunshine do not always mean London. I got absolutely baited into that one.
- Area codes and council names are gold dust. If I'd known 0161 was Manchester or where Oldham was, I could’ve made a much better guess.
- Housing estates are brutal. They all look the same, and without a clue, it’s like throwing a dart at a map.
The Road to Mastery
This was just the first of many battles. My father’s truck-driving knowledge gives him an insane advantage, but I’m determined to close the gap. Up next: a deeper dive into UK area codes, road signs, and regional architecture.
Let’s see if I can level the playing field.
