How to Use Flags in GeoGuessr

Use visible flags as structured clues instead of guessing from colours alone.

Read the layout first

Key takeaway

Layout plus colour order is more reliable than colour alone.

Treat a flag like a road sign: read the layout before the colours. A quick layout read often narrows the map faster than trying to remember every national flag from memory.

Fast layout checklist

  • Vertical tricolour: check the order from the flagpole outward. France is blue-white-red, Italy is green-white-red, Ireland is green-white-orange, Belgium is black-yellow-red, and Romania is blue-yellow-red.
  • Horizontal tricolour: read top-to-bottom. The Netherlands is red-white-blue, Russia is white-blue-red, Poland is white-red, Indonesia and Monaco are red-white, and Austria is red-white-red.
  • Nordic cross: an off-centre cross points to the Nordic family. Denmark is red with a white cross, Sweden is blue/yellow, Finland is white/blue, Norway is red/white/blue, and Iceland is blue/white/red.
  • Triangle at the hoist: common in flag families such as Jordan, Palestine, Czechia, Cuba, South Africa, and several Caribbean or Arab-world flags. The triangle colour and stripe order matter.

Do not stop at "red, white, and blue". That colour set appears in many unrelated places. Ask for the geometry first, then use colour order.
