Watch for lookalikes
Key takeaway
A lookalike flag should start a comparison, not end the round.
The useful part of a lookalike flag is that it gives you a short comparison list. When you see a familiar pattern, immediately ask which nearby countries can imitate it.
High-value comparisons
- Italy versus Ireland: both are green-white-last-colour vertical tricolours. Italy's final stripe is red and the country drives on the right; Ireland's final stripe is orange and you should expect left-side driving, white plates, and often yellow outer road dashes.
- France versus Romania versus Belgium: all are vertical tricolours, but the left stripe differs. France starts blue and ends red, Romania starts blue and has yellow in the middle, Belgium starts black.
- Netherlands versus Luxembourg versus Russia: all are horizontal red/white/blue families. The Netherlands is red-white-blue, Russia is white-blue-red, and Luxembourg's blue is usually lighter. Use plates and language to confirm.
- Poland versus Indonesia/Monaco: Poland is white over red, while Indonesia and Monaco are red over white. Context matters because Monaco has very limited coverage compared with Indonesia.
- Nordic crosses: once you see the cross, stop thinking "generic Europe" and compare the five main colour sets. The cross is offset toward the flagpole, not centred like Switzerland or England.
If the flag is on a tourist attraction, embassy, hotel, or ferry, be careful: it may represent a visitor, a company, or a nearby border rather than the country you are in.
